When a printer takes on the name of a precious metal, you expect greatness. And according to a recent Lexmark press release, the Platinum Pro905 Inkjet All-in-One Printer/Scanner/Copier and Fax Machine has delivered the goods by being named a 2010 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) Innovations Honoree in the Computer Peripherals division. CES is a trade show held in Las Vegas every winter, and winning an Innovations Honoree Award is a nice way to build some hype around your product.
All that said, a CES Innovations designation isn’t exactly performance-based. As we mentioned this past January, judges only get a photo of the product and some basic info with which to make their selections. In other words, if it looks cool and seems uniquely functional, your product appears to stand a good chance of getting a nod from the committee. The Platinum Pro905 is the high end model in Lexmark’s new fleet of web-connected printers with big touchscreens, so the honor isn’t a shock.
The interesting thing to watch out for will be whether the HP TouchSmart printers get recognized at CES 2010. Both the Lexmark and HP models feature similar touchscreens and PC-free connectivity to various web apps, so the 2010 CES Innovations Awards could be an indication of which side holds the early edge.
