As we mentioned back in February, the Lexmark X6650 is a 4-in-1 inkjet printer that can scan, copy and fax. It also connects to a network via Wi-Fi, has a 25 page auto document feeder (ADF) for hands-free multi page processing, and it prints photos PC-free via PictBridge and Memory Card. But as we’ve said before, the spec sheet doesn’t mean much unless it’s backed by solid performance in situations that simulate real world conditions. A couple experts have tried the X6650 for themselves and conclude that it’s a mixed bag.
Printer Comparison considers the X6650 compact, easy to set up, easy to use, and a good all-around value. That said, the review has a couple notable critiques to keep in mind. First off, ink cartridges are “temperamental and sometimes don’t register after being loaded into the printer.” In addition, scanner resolution and PictBridge photo print quality could use some improvement. As a result, you have an MFP that gets the big picture but skimps a bit on the details.
Eric Grevstad of Hardware Central gives the X6650 a mediocre 10 stars out of 15. He likes the simple design and overall feature set for the price. However, Grevstad feels that auto duplexing, an Ethernet connection, and a legitimate LCD preview screen would make the X6650 feel a little more complete. Otherwise, everything is decidedly decent, from text quality and print speed to cost per page for ink. Grevstad finds himself “damning the X6650 with faint praise… it would get a thumbs-down review if it cost more but isn’t bad for $130.” In the end, he recommends spending extra and getting something better.
